The new year has begun, and so have plans for displaying at, and visiting, the 2016 franchise events. There are many shows scheduled around the world and they are brilliant for comparing and talking to franchisors face-to-face, for networking, for asking questions, for securing loans, and for learning from lectures and workshops. So which ones should potential franchisees go to?!
We have done the research for you and picked out the most important expos, fairs and conferences that are going to take place in Asia and further afield. Summaries of the events are provided below, plus website links if you want to find out more and reserve a seat.
NOTE: Look out for the three in India…they've been highlighted!
Title: 4th India SME Banking Conclave
Date: 30 January
*Location: Hotel Sahara Star, Mumbai, India*
Description: The Small and Medium Business Development Chamber of India – which has been helping SMEs grow for over 20 years – has organised this event to bring together bankers and entrepreneurs ‘to deliberate on enhancing the credit flow to SMEs’. Few franchisors give their investors financial assistance, so individuals hoping to buy a franchise often have to turn to banks or other financial institutions for help. That’s why this event, while not aimed at the franchise industry specifically, will be an excellent opportunity for franchisees to gain advice on securing that loan.
Title: Franchise and Retail Opportunities Show (FRO2016) South
Dates: 27 and 28 February
*Location: Hyderabad International Convention Centre, Hyderabad, India*
Description: For those who cannot make it to the country’s main franchise expo of the year (on 15 and 16 October, see below), there will be a franchise expo and conference further south in Hyderabad next month. Visitors will have the chance to meet face-to-face with reputed national and international brands from all sectors, but particularly retail and real estate. The potential franchisee can also receive advisory services from a Franchise Clinic and radically increase their chances of getting funding.
Title: Malaysia International Retail, Franchise and Licensing Fair (MIRF)
Dates: 3 to 6 March
Location: Mid Valley Exhibition Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Description: This fair is promising to be ‘the first of its kind in Malaysia’, with much emphasis being placed on its sheer volume – it is hoping to display more than 250 of the best retail brands from many countries in Asia including Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, China, Indonesia, and the Philippines. 30,000 visitors are expected over the four days, with 4 to 6 March being open to the public. Features will include keynote speakers, fancy shows of new products, promotions, and the chance for visitors to examine a wide range of franchises and business opportunities.
Title: The British & International Franchise Exhibition
Dates: 11 and 12 March
Location: Olympia, London, UK
Description: This exhibition has a good blend of both local and international franchises, perfect if you are contemplating entering into the UK market. There will be brands from all sectors including food, education, fitness, property, business services and many more, and all the franchisors have been accredited by the British Franchise Association. Workshops, one-to-one advice clinics, and free seminars will all be available to enlighten visitors.
Title: The Franchising & Business Opportunities Expo
Dates: 18 to 20 March
Location: Sydney, Australia
Description: This is one of the four Franchising & Business Opportunities Expo shows taking place in Australia this year, each in a different month and city. The show is very much aimed at new, first-time franchisees who are still doing their research, as it offers them lots of free legal and financial advice, free daily seminars, and the chance to talk with the Franchise Council of Australia. There will of course also be franchisors and franchisees from hundreds of businesses in all sectors on display. The four dates and locations are: Sydney on 18 and 20 March; Perth on 6 and 7 May; Brisbane on 23 and 24 July; and Melbourne from 26 to 28 August.
Title: Retail in Mall
Dates: 6 and 7 April
Location: Grand Hyatt, Singapore
Description: Retail is one of the largest sectors in the franchising industry. While a franchisor will usually ensure that a franchisee is choosing a suitable location for their new store, this is not always done, particularly if a master franchise or area developer licence has been bought. This conference in Singapore finds solutions to the challenges faced by retailers who are selling in shopping centres, covering topics such as rent, demographics and store design.

Location: Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Description: FIM is the largest annual franchising exhibition and conference in Southeast Asia. 2016 will be its 22nd year, as it brings together local and international franchises from all over the world to openly discuss franchise issues and the development of entrepreneurship in Malaysia. The service and retail sectors will be given extra attention.
Title: IFRA International Franchise, License & Business Concept Expo & Conference
Dates: 3 to 5 June
Location: Jakarta, Indonesia
Description: Indonesia is the biggest market in the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). Its annual franchise event will be held at the Jakarta Convention Center, and will display franchise and business opportunities from food and beverages, automotive, travel, business services, education, health and beauty, retail, and many other sectors. If previous years are anything to go by, then there will also be multiple seminars, conferences, workshops, and business matching events.

Title: Franchise Asia Philippines
Dates: 20 to 24 July
Location: SMX Convention Center, Manila, Philippines

It is a ‘4-in-1’ event, including an international franchise expo, an international franchise conference, a series of educational franchise seminars and a certified franchise executive programme. It declares itself the largest franchise show in all of Asia, and this is quite possible if the impressive statistics on its website are to be believed.
Title: Thailand Franchise & Business Opportunities 2016 (12th edition)
Dates: 4 to 7 August
Location: BITEC, Bangkok, Thailand
Description: The ‘biggest’ and ‘best’ venue in Thailand for international franchisors to present themselves at, the size of this event reflects the popularity of franchising in Thailand. Exhibitors and visitors are primarily international, and the show has support from government agencies and franchise associations in Thailand and abroad.
Title: China Franchise Expo
Dates: 1 to 3 September
Location: Shanghai, China
Description: Last year, the China Franchise Expo took place three times and in three different locations (Beijing in May; Chengdu in June; and Shanghai in September). It can be assumed that the same will happen this year, although the website has yet to be updated for 2016. The massive event provides a platform for franchisors from all industries and countries, and gives those hoping to set up a franchise in China the chance to explore business opportunities on offer in the world’s largest market.

Title: FLAsia – Franchising & Licensing Asia 2016
Dates: 13 to 15 October 2016
Location: Marina Bay Sands, Singapore
Description: This event is a big one, and very much focused on helping the little entrepreneurs and prospective franchisees. They are given the chance to network and engage face-to-face with wise consultants and industry experts, and of course representatives of international brands, in order to ‘forge new partnerships’, and ‘seal business deals’. They can also attend informative educational talks, international conferences, roundtable discussions and workshops in order to gain empowering knowledge about developments and opportunities in the franchise industry.
Title: Franchise India 2016
Dates: 15 and 16 October
